Illinois faces a severe shortage of community mental health providers. Cook County is 16,000 providers short of what it needs, and numbers continue to dwindle, with 30 to 50 percent leaving the profession every year. Meanwhile, few remaining providers take Medicaid or Medicare and publicly insured individuals go without critical mental health care. We believe this system is broken and that it’s time for a change!  Rayo Counseling and Community Co-op is a worker-led, democratically organized community mental health center providing services free from coercion to under-resourced individuals across the mental health continuum. Our mission is 3-fold: (1) provide accessible, high-quality mental health care to individuals regardless of their capacity to pay; (2) improve staff retention by fostering a sustainable work environment for community mental health professionals; (3) create depth-oriented mental health programming that privileges client autonomy, promotes inter-personal functioning, and supports self-expression.
